  Mockerie thought back. “He had curly white hair, didn’t he? I tried to cut some of it off once and he hit me.”

  “You tried to cut off his ear, dear. But no matter. He was an evil man. I took a lot from him. Until the day came when I decided I wouldn’t take any more. I sent him off to Siberia.”

  “You sent him?”

  Her smile grew even more serene. “Yes. Siberia and Antarctica. The Bering Sea and Hong Kong Harbor. He hated the water. I, on the other hand, loved it. Did you know if you drop a cardboard box in water, what doesn’t dissolve will be consumed by some form of marine life? And, of course, many species of fish just love to devour flesh and bone.

  Frowning, Mockerie blinked at her. “Are you saying…? What are you saying?”

  The serenity of her smile had one of the few chills of fear he’d ever experienced crawling down his spine.

  “I’m saying…” Her voice dropped to a whisper, and she edged forward in a conspiratorial fashion. “As bad as you are, and as cold as Robbie can be when she’s Bert, in your worst nightmares, neither of you would ever want to see my other side…”
